What a great weekend for the Fall Down Classic. Many familiar faces from WSF came out for the event and a great number from out of town. The event drew 100 participants from Toronto, London and Michigan. This year’s events featured A, B, C, and Doubles divisions. Not to be forgotten, some great night life followed at The Poor House.
Brad Hanebury of London, Ontario came to Windsor this year on a mission. Hanebury walked though the competition in Men’s A Draw. Hanebury only lost one game on route to the Championship. Since Hanebury was the 3 seed he was forced to play all the top players in the tournament, but this did not stop him as he downed Birmingham, Michigan’s John Uffelman, Windsor’s Mark Eugeni and Mark Porter. Porter tried to slow down Hanebury’s play by keeping him out late the night before finals, but failed.
Before the tournament Barry Leavitt made a special purchase for him and his doubles partner Paul “Sinbad” Gebrael, matching “Spongebob Squarepants” bandanas. Using the power of “Spongebob” they powered their way through the competition to the championship. In route, they encountered a few heated and tough matches. After being crowned B Doubles Champions the paramedics were called to help remove Gebrael from the doubles court as his head had swelled too much to fit though the door.
In the men’s B Division Scott Preston felt slighted by the tournament coordinators with being seated so low. Preston a 3 seed used this as motivation to show that he was the best player in the field. Preston’s styles of play worked well for him this weekend as he slowly grinded down his opponents with long rallies and never die attitude. This allowed him to prevail as tournament champion. With this victory Preston made it clear to his nemesis Todd Brancaccio that he is the man to beat in tournaments.
