4th Annual WSF Golf Tourney

The most interesting squash coach in the world
(take your pick)
This year's edition of WSF Summer Solstice did not disappoint.  At first, it looked like we might be rained out but the squash gods were on our side as the rain seem to fall all around us.  80 golfers descended on Rochester determined to bring it to its knees.  However, only one foursome would prove to be worthy of that (no Al, Mike and Barry, it wasn't your group).  The winning foursome and a repeat winner from last year was Michael Sovran, Ryan Klokman, Rich Kennedy and Chalen Fecteau .  They must be getting tired of going to Red Wings games courtesy of Riverview Steel :)

2nd Place ($50 gift certificates to Windsor Squash and Fitness)- Will St. Aubin, Matt McEachran, Aaron Gillis, Jamie Revait

3rd Place ($50 gift certificates to Rochester Golf Course)- Kevin Furmanek, Stan Furmanek, Mark Stone, Graham Duguid

1st Junior Team (movie passes + golf balls)- Navtej Bhangoo, Jagroop Bhangoo, Nick Dimitrov, Phil Dimitrov

1st Mixed Team ($25 gift certificates to Parkside Grille)- Lou Prantera,

Most Honest Team (Comedy Quarry tickets)- Brian Porter, Dave Porter, Tom Porter, Thiago Fagionato

Men's Longest Drive ($50 gift certificate to Rochester Golf Course)- Trevor Scarfone

Women's Longest Drive ($50 gift certificate to Rochester Golf Course)- Kathy Brown

Men's Closest to the Pin ($50 gift certificate to Rochester Golf Course)- Dan VanMorsel

Women's Closest to the Pin ($50 gift certificate to Rochester Golf Course)- Heather Scott

After golf we were treated to some great Parkside Grille food while we auctioned off a record number of items.  Thanks to the generous support of those listed below as we had many auction items. There was something for everyone.
During the awards ceremony we had the appearance of a special guest.  He didn't have a lot to say, he just kept an eye on things.  However, he let loose when the music started, thanks to DJ Mike Melee.  Dancing and partying continued late into the evening.  Pictures can be found here.
Thank you to the generous support of the people below.  This event continues to grow and the juniors thank you for their support.  This money goes to support our junior program in a variety of ways such as subsidized clinics for those that need assistance, subsidized lessons, coaches clinics, tournaments, travel, yearly bursary for graduating players, attire.
Thank You!!

Weekly Update 25th August 2014

I travel to Mexico with the Canadian National Team next Wednesday but once back from there it will be all hands on deck.

The Die Hard Summer League has its play offs tomorrow night.  I have attached the final league table along with tomorrow nights matches.  Team 2 made a late dash to force their way into the final pushing team 1 into the 3rd and 4th place match.

You will notice I have only allotted 20min time slots to encourage everyone to play tomorrow and hang around after playing to watch the rest of their team.  The trophy will also be presented to the winning team and I will personally be filling it with beer.

I am continuing to push the Leagues we are running in the Fall.  They all start the week of Monday 15th September.  You can enter by completing the following forms or by contacting the front desk.  Below are the leagues I am running.

Fall Leagues:  Our regular weekly house leagues on a monday and Tuesday night. A players on a Monday and B players on Tuesday.

Fall Doubles League:  Will run on a Monday and Tuesday night as well.  Sign up as a pair or individual.  B Players on a Monday and A Players on a  Tuesday.

Noon League:  The ever popular noon league is on Thursday's at 12.15.  Depending on sign ups the 11.30am time slot may also be used.

Breakfast League:  Brand new!!  all matches will be played on a thursday morning at 6.30am.  Other time slots are available if needed.

JUNIORS:

The junior program starts again on Saturday 6th September.  I am hoping this will be our busiest year to date with lots of new players entering the program and those who have been playing a while starting to enter more tournaments.  The flyer is attached please contact me to reserve a spot and if you have any questions about which session you should be in.

ADOPT A JUNIOR:

This is the final call for this.  I need any members who wish to help out a junior to send me an email outlining their intent.  I also need any juniors who wish to take advantage of this to send me an email.  The idea is the junior will have to contact their partner to arrange to play twice a month.  More if mutually agreed!  I have also had some members offer to donate some money towards their juniors coaching cost and tournaments cost which is really generous!  if you feel like doing something similar let me know.

NEW BLOG:

As well as the emails I will be updating the blog page to include as much information about the club.  Please visit http://wsfsquash.blogspot.ca to see how the page is progressing!

JUNIOR GOLF FUNDRAISER:

I have received a lukewarm response about the proposed Junior Golf Fundraiser on Saturday 4th October.  I need 10 foursomes to run it.  If you feel you could get a foursome then please send me an email.

Have a great week

Great Week of Squash Camp

This past week we completed what was our best week of camp ever!  Not only did we have a record number of participants in attendance, but we had excellent coaching by some of Windsor's Squash and Fitness junior program graduates (Marcus Moceri, Micaela Khan, Stefan Houbtchev).  The level of play improved significantly as the week went on and we definitely have some future stars in our mix.  Thanks to all who participated and helped us out last week!

World Squash Day - Back the Bid!!

Back The Bid!!
Support World Squash Day at Windsor Squash and Fitness.
On October the 20th we will be doing our best to support the bid for squash's inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games. We will be promoting the sport by opening our doors
to any junior who wishes to try the sport. Between 9am and 11.30am there will be the chance to join in with our current juniors who will help teach the sport for the day. At 1pm we will have a free tasters session for any adults wishing to try this great sport followed by the official 20/20 match between 20 of our members and 20 London Squash Club members.

We will be asking for a match fee of 10 dollars to cover the cost of hosting our visitors and food and drink will be provided!

Please visit http://worldsquashday.com/ for more information about the concept.

“Nothing happens unless first a dream”. Four years ago the North American Junior Squash Championship moved from a dream to a reality and this event has continued to grow and gain in stature internationally. Harrow Sports is once again the major sponsor and over the last four years have supported the event in a big way.

The 2011 event is being played at Toronto’s new National Squash Academy – again, the result of a dream – Jonathon Power, Gary Waite and Jamie Nicolls dream. The new squash centre houses 10 courts with two all glass courts.

The mandate of the Championship is to bring high performance athletes from all over the world and provide them with an unbelievable competitive opportunity. The tournament will use the Monrad draw format which gives all entrants plenty of matches. Entires are limited to 32 in the boys’ event and 16 in the girls’ division.

The event will help prepare high performance squash athletes for the upcoming season and will international high performance players the opportunity to visit Toronto, Canada and play in one of North American’s premier junior squash events.

Leading up to the event is the Jonathon Power 2 week elite camp. The camp is a great way to prepare for the event and the coaching staff that the camp provides is second to none.

2nd Annual MSRA Junior Benefit

This fun event is also a serious fund raiser. All money raised will be going towards the $100,000 challenge grant secured by National Urban Squash and Education Association ( http://www.nationalurbansquash.org ) that is launching the Detroit program this year!
This program combines squash, academic, mentoring and focuses on changing the lives of Detroit's least advantaged kids and that the program is modelled after nine very successful programs in other U.S. Cities. Truly a dream come true for many of us. Please help us obtain this grant by either buying tickets or making donations. I encourage all MSRA members to support this event by attending, donating, or marketing this event to others. Sponsorships are available starting at $250.This event is also a family event. Beyond seeing the promising juniors playing, there will be Prince door prizes, and beer, pop and snacks will be provided.
Click on the promotion above for all the details of the event. For more information on the junior development program in Michigan and how you can help make a difference, you can contact MSRA president Hugh Stalker at hughstalker@comcast.net
